BALTIMORE, MD May 6, 2009 – Tough times call for a tougher resolve to raise capital for charities such as The Red Devils, a nonprofit organization that funds services to improve the quality of life for Maryland breast cancer patients and their families. That call has been answered by corporations and institutions which still believe in the benefits of “giving back” despite the economic bust.
“Our biggest fundraiser of the year is the annual Heart and Sole Stroll held this spring on Sunday, June 14. We hope to raise $130,000. More than 25 percent of our operating budget comes from the monies raised on this one day, so it’s absolutely crucial it be a success,” saysThe Red Devils Executive Director Jan Wilson.
Under Armour is this year’s Presenting Sponsor of the Stroll at Centennial Park in Columbia, MD at 10:00 a.m. The performance apparel, footwear and accessories of the Maryland-based manufacturer are worn by athletes worldwide.
“This is Under Armours first year and we’re really proud to be associated with this brand and the fact they selected us for their support,” said 2009 Stroll co-captain Stephanie Inglis. “We are equally grateful that we’ve retained our very first sponsor, Howard County General Hospital, which has been with us from day one in a very visible way, giving support in both dollars and fielding a team of strollers from amongst the hospital ranks, from top docs to former and current patients.”
Other notable sponsors this year include Aegon Transamerica Foundation, Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC); Harbor Hospital, part of the MedStar Health network; Good Samaritan Hospital; and the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Center at GBMC. Baltimore media partners are MIX 106.5 Radio (WWMX-FM), whose on-air morning show personality “JoJo” will again emcee the event, as well asSmartWoman Online.
“Howard County General Hospital is very proud to have been the first hospital partner of the Red Devils,” says Victor A. Broccolino, president and CEO of Howard County General Hospital: A Member of Johns Hopkins Medicine. “The services that the Red Devils provide to breast cancer patients and their families are invaluable during the difficult time of diagnosis and treatment. The support is even more important during these difficult economic times, which is why we are as committed as ever to supporting the Red Devils’ mission and we strongly encourage others to lend their support as well.”
Recently The Red Devils received a $150,000 grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer. The grant is the single largest received in the history of the organization and in part helped fundThe Red Devils expansion early this year into the D.C. suburbs of Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties.
Now in its seventh year, the Heart and Sole Stroll is the signature event of The Red Devils, formed in 2002 by the families and friends of Jessica Cowling and Ginny Schardt, who succumbed to breast cancer that same year, a month apart. The two had met during chemotherapy treatment and were fortunate to have a superior support network.
Board and founding member Rebecca Berger, Jessica’s close friend, says that “We wanted other people who didn’t have that same level of help to know that someone out there cared very much whether they lived, and that there was a good quality-of-life to their existence. Our assistance is not based on economic need, but on the toll breast cancer takes not just on the patient, but her circle of friends and family who also are devastated by this disease.”
Through a provider network, The Red Devils fund services such as transportation to and from doctor appointments; help with drug co-payments; meals and groceries; housecleaning; and therapeutic massages.
On-line registration for the Stroll is underway now. Day-of registration is at 9:00 a.m., with the walk set to begin at 10:00 a.m. More than 600 strollers turned out last year and organizers hope to exceed that number this June. Individual registration for the Heart and Sole Stroll is $35; a family registration is $70. Everyone – including family pets – is welcome to participate in this non-competitive walk held “rain or shine” on June 14.
Says Wilson, “Our goal this year is to raise $130,000. Every dollar you raise gets us closer and helps fund essential support services for breast cancer patients and their families. Here’s how we’ll put the money you raise to good use. $50 will help pay for one roundtrip ride for treatment. $75 will cover one house cleaning. $100 will help provide meals and groceries for a family for one week. $300 will help pay a patient’s prescription drug co-payments. In addition to enjoying the 2.4 mile walk around Centennial Lake in Columbia, you’ll be entertained in the Strollers Village, have an opportunity to meet representatives from our partner hospitals and sponsors, and enjoy a picnic with friends and family to celebrate your achievement.
“Pack a cooler; grills are available. And If you are a breast cancer survivor, stop by the Survivor Tent for a special gift. Awards and prizes will be given to outstanding individual, family, and team fund raisers. You could be a winner if you get started early. Don’t delay. Register or make a donation today.”

¢â¬fun¢â¬ walk.
¢â¬More than 25 percent of our operating budget comes from the monies raised on this one day, so it absolutely crucial it be a success,¢â¬ according to The Red Devils Executive Director Jan Wilson, who expects a turnout of 600-plus.
Through a provider network, The Red Devils funds services such as transportation to and from doctor appointments; help with drug co-payments; meals and groceries; housecleaning; and therapeutic massages.
The group operates from temporary headquarters on Joppa Road in Towson, MD. A fire last August 22 forced The Red Devils to abandon offices on York Road in Baltimore City near the historic Senator Theatre. Wilson learned of the blaze from a late-night television report that Friday. By Monday, a Good Samaritan had appeared in the form of the American Breast Cancer Foundation (ABCF), a non-profit founded in 1997 that offered to share space in their national headquarters at 1220 B E. Joppa Road, Ste. 332, in Towson, MD. Two days later, The Red Devils were moved in.
According to ABCF Co-founder and President Phyllis Wolf, ¢â¬We¢â¬â¢ve been a long-standing supporter of The Red Devils. Our services are very complementary. Through our Key to Life Breast Cancer Screening Program, we focus on providing uninsured and underinsured women and men nationwide with the financial assistance they need to obtain diagnostic services such as mammograms and biopsies because early detection saves lives. ¢â¬
¢â¬We were really blessed to have a helping hand from ABCF as well as the other sponsors and individuals committed to making this stroll a success despite the bleak economic climate,¢â¬ according to Wilson who says this year Stroll fundraising goal is $130,000.
¢â¬Every dollar you raise gets us closer and helps fund essential support services for breast cancer patients and their families. Here how we¢â¬â¢ll put the money you raise to good use. $50 will help pay for one roundtrip ride for treatment. $75 will cover one house cleaning. $100 will help provide meals and groceries for a family for one week. $300 will help pay a patient prescription drug co-payments,¢â¬ Wilson says.
Under Armour is this year Presenting Sponsor. The performance apparel, footwear and accessories of the Maryland-based manufacturer are worn by athletes worldwide.
¢â¬This is Under Armour first year and we¢â¬â¢re really proud to be associated with this brand and the fact they selected us for their support,¢â¬ says 2009 Stroll co-chair Paige Koerner.
Co-chair Claudia Brooke says,¢â¬ We are equally grateful that we¢â¬â¢ve retained our very first sponsor, Howard County General Hospital, which has been with us from day one in a very visible way.¢â¬
According to the Stroll third co-chair Stephanie Inglis, other notable sponsors this year include Aegon Transamerica Foundation, Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC); Harbor Hospital, part of the MedStar Health network; Good Samaritan Hospital; and the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Center at GBMC.
Clear Channel Outdoor, a national outdoor advertising company with an area office in Laurel, MD, is another business that stepped up to the plate in tough economic times to help The Red Devils. Ronda Badiang, a Carroll County resident who has benefited from The Red Devils services, called the company out of the blue late this winter in hopes of securing a billboard.
Says Badiang, ¢â¬I realized it was a very long shot but why not? We had nothing to lose and everything to gain.¢â¬
Badiang learned from that Clear Channel Outdoor makes many efforts to support non-profits if there is available inventory. As it happened, The Red Devils request came at exactly the ¢â¬right¢â¬ moment. Several billboards could be positioned just in time to allow a few weeks of advance promotion for the Stroll. Five billboards were donated: two in Carroll County; two in Baltimore City; and one in Prince George County.
Other Baltimore media supporting the Stroll are ABC 2 TV; MIX 106.5 Radio (WWMX-FM), whose on-air morning show personality ¢â¬JoJo¢â¬ Girard will emcee the event along with WMAR Cheryl Conner; plus SmartWoman Online.
Recently, The Red Devils received a $150,000 grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer. The grant is the single largest
received in the history of the organization and in part helped fund The Red Devils expansion earlier this year into the D.C. suburbs of Maryland Montgomery and Prince George Counties.
Now in its seventh year, The Red Devils was incorporated in 2002, founded by the families and friends of Jessica Cowling and Ginny Schardt, who succumbed to breast cancer that same year, a month apart. The two had met during chemotherapy treatment and were fortunate to have a superior support network.
The Red Devils Board President Jeanne Backof says ¢â¬We wanted other people who didn¢â¬â¢t have that same level of help to know that someone out there cared very much whether they lived and that there was a good quality-of-life to their existence. Our assistance is not based on economic need, but on the toll breast cancer takes not just on the patient, but her circle of friends and family who also are devastated by this disease.¢â¬

Individual registration for the Heart and Sole Stroll is $35; a family registration is $70. Everyone Ã¢â¬” including leashed family pets Ã¢â¬” is welcome to participate in this non-competitive walk held Ã¢â¬Ãrain or shineÃ¢â¬Ã on June 14.

Lucky Number 7.” We could not have asked for a more perfect day or a more energetic assembly of Strollers. Thank you for making the Heart and Sole Stroll a tremendous success. Because of your generosity, this yearÃ Stroll will add at least $105,000 to our funds for breast cancer patients and their families. With the money you raised, we will be able to relieve some of the burdens facing so many patients like the woman who wrote to us saying, Ã¢â¬ÃBefore I began my 36 radiation treatments, I was very concerned about the cost and how it would affect my family. It is difficult to tell you how surprised and happy I was to learn that I would receive your help. It truly made the beginning of my treatments less stressful, and was one of the rare uplifting occurrences during this great cancer journey.Ã¢â¬Ã
We hope you had a wonderful time and left Centennial Lake uplifted by knowing that every email you sent, every phone call you made, every personal appeal for team members and donations, and every step of your 2.4 mile walk mattered in someone life.
Please mark your calendars for Stroll 8, June 13 at Centennial Lake. While registration isn¢â¬â¢t open just yet, when the time comes, use The Red Devils Platinum Rewards Visa card to pay for your registration or to make your contribution. A percentage of every purchase made with the card benefits the patients we assist.
Thank you, again, for your continued support. Remember, this year Stroll website will remain open for anyone who wasn¢â¬â¢t able to support a Stroller or make a general donation in advance of the Stroll.
Best wishes,
The Red Devils

img src=”http://www.the-red-devils.org/mediabucket/Top-Banana.jpg ” alt=”Top Banana Crew” />Jean Guiffre didnÃ¢â¬â¢t intend to change careers as a private investigator in 1982 and start a business that would bring tears of thanks to those helped, but she always had a penchant for Ã¢â¬Ãgiving backÃ¢â¬Ã even when she was in dogged pursuit of missing persons.
Almost 30 years later, she hasn¢â¬â¢t looked back, but forward to continuing Top Banana, an operation based in Prince George County providing food for the body as well as nourishment for the soul and now joining The Red Devils network of service providers.
Top Banana, a name linked to a well-known vaudeville production and synonymous with top-notch people and efforts, is a non-profit set up like a grocery market servicing those in need Ã¢â¬” especially the elderly and immobile Ã¢â¬” allowing them to receive the sustenance they need.
Guiffre got the idea when visiting her elderly mom and realizing with a shock, her once able-bodied mother cupboards were bare. She started bringing supplies, driving an hour each way, each week. Soon Guiffre mom living room was filled with others in similar straights, each hoping Guiffre generosity would extend to them as well.
It did, with Guiffre taking little or no salary for years to keep the business afloat, providing goods at prices set between the major food markets. ¢â¬We don¢â¬â¢t want people to pay more for their groceries, but a fair price. We charge $15 for delivery and people on extreme budgets could pay as little as $5,¢â¬ according to Guiffre, who receives widespread community support, including from big-name grocers.
Shady Grove Hospital, one of the newest hospitals to join The Red Devils team, recently referred its first patient to Top Banana.
Says Guiffre, ¢â¬It wonderful to partner with area hospitals through The Red Devils, which already established the relationships and brings such credibility. When I learned about The Red Devils I felt such an immediate connection, because they are a most original and innovative group which really serves a need, right where it needed most, and that how I also feel about Top Banana.¢â¬

BEST-SELLING AUTHOR AND BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR KELLY CORRIGAN LIMITED ENGAGEMENT TO BENEFIT THE RED DEVILS
Corrigan to Regale Audience with Excerpts from New Book, Lift
Kelly Corrigan comes to Baltimore Tuesday, April 27 for a limited engagement at Mercy Medical Center to benefit The Red Devils. The Noon – 2:00 p.m. luncheon is limited to the first 100 who register in advance on line.
The Bay Area resident who hails from the Philadelphia Main Line debuts her second novel, Lift, in March. Written as a letter to her children, Lift is a tender, intimate, and robust portrait of risk and love; a touchstone for anyone who wants to live more fully. In Lift, Corrigan weaves together three true and unforgettable stories of adults willing to experience emotional hazards in exchange for the gratifications of raising children. Lift takes its name from hang gliding. For Corrigan, this air flight becomes a metaphor for all of life”s most meaningful endeavors, particularly the great flight that is parenting. Corrigan serves it up straight — how both mundanely and fiercely how her children have been loved, how close most lives occasionally come to disaster, and how often we fall short as mothers and fathers.
Tickets are $35 per person which covers lunch and a copy of Lift. Discounted parking with validation is available in Mercy Saratoga Street garage. Location is the Truman T. Seman Room, one level above The Weinberg Center open lobby area, 301 St. Paul Place. No tickets will be sold at the door.
Space is limited. Register today!
The Red Devils would like to thank Mercy Medical Center for partially underwriting this event.

For more than half a century, Mildred Mindell Cancer Foundation (MMCF), an all- volunteer non-profit organization, has raised funds through community activities, events, and grassroots programs to help local hospitals and organizations fight cancer and help patients survive and thrive. Since its inception, MMCF has proudly donated more than $5 million to local hospitals, organizations, and health care facilities for direct patient care services, education, and other cancer-related programs and initiatives.
This year, on Sunday, May 16, 2010, MMCF will host ¢â¬A Tasting at the Station¢â¬ at Green Spring Station in Lutherville, MD to benefit the Cancer Institute at St. Joseph Medical Center and The Red Devils. This event will be attended by more than 300 community members representing St. Joseph Medical Center, The Red Devils, and MMCF; as well as medical vendors, local foundations, and corporations. It will be fun-filled; with fantastic food, wonderful entertainment, festive music, activities, and exciting raffles. The proceeds from the event will enable cancer patients in urgent need of funds to receive lifesaving treatment and care and the hope of a cure.
To attend Tasting at the Station, you may complete the reply card or send an email to momjps@aol.com. Tickets are $75 per person.
About MMCF
Over forty years ago, a group of young women came together for the purpose of making a meaningful contribution to the welfare of others. Soon after, and before definite plans were formulated, Mildred Mindell, their close friend and adviser, was fatally stricken by cancer. After Mildred premature death, these young friends knew that their cause was established, and they pledged themselves to memorialize her name in a significant and befitting manner. Thus, in 1957, in Baltimore, Maryland, the Mildred Mindell Cancer Foundation was born.
As we further reflect, we must ask why Ã¢â¬” why did the death of Mildred Mindell inspire a group of young women to so fervently devote their efforts to the treatment and eradication of cancer? The answer to this is found not in MildredÃ death but in her life. Ã¢â¬ÃMillie,Ã¢â¬Ã as she was endearingly known to her young Phi Delta Sorority girls, could always be counted upon to enlist support and aid for a worthy or needy cause. Whether it is the need for food, clothing, money, or just plain work, Mildred and her girls would always rise to the task. She would become very involved, and by this example, would involve those around her. All those who knew Mildred respected her and looked to her for guidance and direction. This direction most significantly led to deep personal involvement in charitable endeavors. Ã¢â¬ÃMillieÃÃ¢â¬Ã impression was indelible, and her girls never forgot the ethics and values, which she instilled in them Ã¢â¬” the devotion to giving of oneÃ self for those less fortunate and in need.
We carry on its mission and motto. PACE-participate and cancer ends.

/>Bestselling Author & Breast Cancer Survivor in Baltimore Area to Promote New Book, Help the Non-Profit
Reading & Book Signing at Mercy Medical Center Part of Series of Events Leading up to
June 13 ¢â¬Heart and Sole Stroll,¢â¬ the Signature Fundraising event for The Red Devils
Baltimore, MD April 12, 2010 Ã¢â¬” Kelly Corrigan, who won hearts and created a run on hankies with her smart and sassy breast cancer survival memoir The Middle Place, comes to Baltimore April 27 for a benefit at Mercy Medical Center for The Red Devils. The luncheon, book signing and reading of excerpts from CorriganÃ new book, Lift, are part of a series of events leading up to the June 13 Ã¢â¬ÃHeart and Sole Stroll,Ã¢â¬Ã the signature fundraising event of the year for The Red Devils, a charity devoted to improving the quality-of-life for MD breast cancer patients and their families.
Ã¢â¬ÃKelly has a unique voice and is able to bring humor to dark subjects and make you believe sheÃ your new best friend. ItÃ probably why weÃ¢â¬â¢ve sold out of tickets for the luncheon part of this event, but sheÃ¢â¬â¢ll stay later to sign books for the general public, and we are hoping her presence here Ã¢â¬” especially at Mercy, one of our 36 partner hospitals Ã¢â¬” will put the spotlight on our Ã¢â¬ÃHeart and Sole Stroll,Ã¢â¬â¢ letting people know they may sign up early, online for our 2.4-mile walk around Centennial Park for breast cancer,Ã¢â¬Ã says The Red Devils Executive Director Jan Wilson.
According to Wilson, ¢â¬Those who miss out on the Mercy luncheon may still see Kelly (pictured here, with daughters) in the lobby of Mercy Weinberg Center. She agreed to stay from 2:15 until about 3:30 p.m. to sign books before she heads to the Talbot store on Annapolis Towne Centre Blvd. for a 6:00 p.m. event in the state capital.¢â¬
The general public is invited at 2:15 p.m. to the lobby of Mercy Hospital at 301 St. Paul Place where Corrigan will sign copies of Lift. Those interested in registering for the Heart and Sole Stroll may also do so at this time as well.
A Bay Area resident who hails from the Philadelphia Main Line, Corrigan comes from a long line of Baltimoreans and even worked here in the 1990s for the United Way. Her mother Mary, grew up in the Homeland section of the City; father George ¢â¬Greenie¢â¬ Corrigan hails from the Govans neighborhood; and brother, Jack, currently works in Owings Mills at The McDonogh School.
Lift, Corrigan second novel, just came out and debuted at Number 2 on The New York Times Bestseller List. Jesse Kornbluth, of The Huffington Post, says, ¢â¬Lift will be the Mother Day gift of choice deep into the next millennium, for Kelly Corrigan is the poet laureate of the ordinary.¢â¬
CorriganÃ first book, The Middle Place, remained in the Number One spot for six months.
