Sadly, their wives, mothers, grandmothers, and sisters are all affected by this disease. Everyone knows someone who has had to deal with the struggles associated with this diagnosis.

Firefighters face a two to four times greater risk of contracting certain types of cancers than the general population. In the past few years, while not specifically breast cancer, Local 2000 has lost 2 of their members to cancer and has several cancer survivors among our ranks. Additionally, several of their members are dealing with loved ones who have some form of cancer, including breast cancer.

Their limited edition “Breast Cancer Awareness” shirt will be worn during the month of October. Fire Fighters wearing pink are a powerful statement. It’s not what one expects to see riding around on a fire engine and that’s what makes it effective. Also, these t-shirts will be for sale to the general public for $15 to help spread the awareness and raise funds for breast cancer. The shirts will be available later in September on their website. Additionally, you’ll be able to come by their office at 5397 Twin Knolls Rd., Ste. 16, Columbia, 21045, beginning October 1 and purchase your shirts there.

One of their own members, FF Kevin Panizari and his wife Tanya, along with their 3 young children, have spent the last year battling Tanya’s breast cancer. The Panizari family was asked to choose the breast cancer charity the proceeds would go to this year. They selected The Red Devils because we were a big help to the Panizari family during their time of need.

Don Your Dancing Togs or Yoga Wear and Get Fit for a Cause!

It’s the Third Annual Zumba & Yoga for Pink event to benefit The Red Devils presented again by Synergy Women’s Fitness and Synergy Pilates & Yoga and Howard Bank. In-kind sponsors are Soilsound and Curly Red.

Never tried Zumba? The name comes from a Columbian colloquialism that means “to move fast and have fun.” The fusion of Latin dance and fitness set to music has even the most flat-footed tempted to Tango. Celebs who work Zumba into their fitness regimes include Vivica A. Fox, C.S.I. Miami’s Eva LaRue and action star Jackie Chan.

Experience Zumba on October 23 at Synergy Women’s Fitness or walk across the driveway for yoga sessions all conducted to live music in “surround sound” for an extraordinary mind, body experience at Synergy Pilates & Yoga, respectively located at 8815 and 8827 Columbia 100 Parkway in Columbia, MD. Easy access off I95, Route 108 and Route 100 means The Red Devils supporters from around the beltway will find this locale a great gathering spot for a great cause.

Early registration is from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. with hour-long Zumba and yoga sessions held at these times: 9:30 a.m.; 10:45 a.m. and Noon. Classes are co-ed. Plan to stay for the reception from 1:00 – 2:00 and get a chance to win some seriously great door prizes drawn between each class session.

Individuals are encouraged to form their own teams or join “Team Synergy.” Register online today to start or join a team. A minimum donation of $15 is suggested.

Pole Dance Competition to Benefit The Red Devils

Throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, women (and men) are strengthening their bodies, challenging their minds, and extending their self expression through pole dancing. This October, pole dance studios in Maryland; Virginia; Pennsylvania; and Washington, DC will meet for one night only to compete for bragging rights as the Best Pole Dance Studio.

The Battle of the Pole Dance Studios will focus on the artistry and athleticism of the performers who will perform moves such as climbs, spins, and body inversions. As a recognized form of exercise, pole dancing offers both an aerobic and anaerobic workout. Dancers will be exhibiting upper body and core strength as they proficiently combine acrobatic feats with the polish of a dancer and entertainer.

A portion of the proceeds from the Battle of the Pole Dance Studios will benefit The Red Devils and will help fund support services for breast cancer families living in Maryland. Thank you for making the Heart and Sole Stroll a tremendous success. Because of your generosity, this year’s Stroll will add almost $100,000 to our funds for breast cancer patients and their families. With the money you raised, we will be able to relieve some of the burdens facing so many patients like the woman who wrote after receiving assistance with her utility payments, “Thank you so much! We didn’t have use of our stove or take hot showers for months and you made our lives not only easier but better. Your assistance helped our family immeasurably. I am unfamiliar with all that you do but from my own experience, I would say you’re doing wonderful things for families that need help during trying times. I am, or shall I say we are all extremely grateful. ”

We hope you had a wonderful time and left Centennial Lake uplifted knowing every email you sent, every phone call you made, every personal appeal for team members and donations, and every step of your 2.4 mile walk mattered in someone’s life.
